20 Great Quotes about the Church

The body of Christ (the local church) is the key instrument that God has set out to advance the gospel to the nations (Matt. 26:26-29; 28:18-20).

  • Christ is the foundation of the Church, (1 Cor. 3:11).
  • He chose the twelve apostles of the church, (Mark 3:14; Matt. 10).
  • He taught them, (Matt. 5-7, 10).
  • He announced the church, (Matt. 16:18).
  • He sent the Spirit to empower the work He had commissioned, (John 14, 15, 16; Acts 1:8).
  • He gave the gifts to the church for the work of the ministry, (Eph. 4:11-12).
  • The message is about His Person and Work.
  • He is the Head of the Church! (Rev. 1).
  • The Apostles and Prophets. (Eph. 2:20).

However, over the past centuries, the bride of Christ has suffered from within and the outside enemies. For this reason, in many ways, Christians too often have diminished the notion of the role and function of the local church.

The local church is the full expression of the universal church and is a distinct community of believers at a particular location (1 Cor. 1:2). At least, from the New Testament accounts, we learn that a local church is a company of saved, baptized people, belonging to a certain place (Matt. 13:24-30; Rom. 16:5; 1 Jn. 2:19).

Therefore, when we gather in our local churches, we are in an organic union with the Body of Christ worldwide! What the world need is not some sort of superhero for Jesus, but a church that is found faithful in the task that has been entrusted unto.
