In this episode of the Ordinary Radicals podcast, Jonathan Hayashi and Brandon Boatner speaks on the topic of Counseling in the Local Church. Counseling can be confusing and even touchy at times.

Some highlights from today’s episode;

  • Counseling in the church perhaps has done more damage in the kingdom ministry.

  • Sometimes in Christian counseling, people give advise in the name of Jesus, yet what is said is based on scripture is too often far from scripture.
  • A lot of people, they don’t go to a Christian Counselor first. They go to their pastor.

  • As much as the Public Ministry of Word of God is important, the Private Ministry of the Word needs to be elevated as well.

Here are few questions we discussed;

  1. What do you know about counseling? (Knowledge & Understanding)
  2. How do you feel about counseling? (Affection & Desires)
  3. What do you do in practice of counseling? (Practice & Actions)
  4. What might prevent you to give biblical counseling to members?

  1. I am concerned about the lack of laying down a broad theological basis about: What is wrong with humans? First, before rebirth then second, after rebirth. For example, you mention “sin” but give no real definition. Second, what is the Practical Theology of application?
    Every Pastor can equip people to care and live with the fruit of the Spirit.

    • @GarySweeten,

      I think you are on to something. I do think in 20 mins of conversation to cover the entire scope of counseling may be hard. We will definitely talk more further about even how one should approach counseling with an unsaved person and saved person.

      Thanks for taking the time to listen to the podcast and your feedback!
